Give Yourself Grace

Don’t be so hard on yourself.

I combined my October, November and December blogs during the month of December. Watch as I discuss them.

It’s something about the word “grace”. Grace is the undeserved favor of God. He grants us grace although we don’t deserve it. He grants us grace in spite of our short comings. Grace is not earned, it’s freely given. We rely on God’s grace to see us though the good and bad times life brings.

If God is so good to give us grace, I wonder why some of us struggle to give others grace? Who are we to not extend grace to others when God so freely gives grace to each of us? Are we saying we’re above God to not show others grace? I hope not. We should extend grace to all, in spite of what they’ve done to us or to others. It can be a hard thing to do sometimes, but we should overcome our feelings and instead give our grace.

Not only should we extend grace to others, but we should give ourselves grace. Wow…this one is a challenge for a lot of us. I know it’s been a challenge for me. We can be so hard on ourselves and forget that we are only human, and we can’t do everything or be everything to everyone. Instead, we should give ourselves grace to know that we are worthy of God’s love. God overlooks our faults and loves us unconditionally. We should do the same for ourselves. Know that it’s okay to make mistakes, to disappoint others or ourselves. This doesn’t mean that we are bad people, it just means that we are human. No human is perfect, that’s not how God designed us. He instead gave us imperfections to keep us humbled. What a beautiful gift we can give to ourselves in grace.

2 Corinthians 12:9 reads “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weakness, so that Christ’s power may rest on me”. This is such good news! God’s grace IS sufficient and that’s all we need.

The next time you are hard on others or yourself, stop to give that person or yourself grace to know that it’s okay and you will get through whatever obstacles that may come your way.
